Havana| The\u00a0Cuban Coast Guard announced this morning, that they had intercepted\u00a0an unmanned ship heading for the island, which is presumed to be the\u00a0SS Cotopaxi<\/em>, a tramp steamer\u00a0which\u00a0vanished in December 1925 and\u00a0has since been connected to the legend of the Bermuda Triangle.<\/h4>\n
The Cuban authorities spotted the ship for the first time on May 16,\u00a0near a restricted military zone, west of Havana.\u00a0They made many unsuccessful attempts to communicate with the crew, and finally\u00a0mobilized\u00a0three\u00a0patrol boats to intercept it.<\/div>\n
When they reached it, they were surprised to\u00a0find that the ship was actually a nearly\u00a0100-year old\u00a0steamer identified as the\u00a0Cotopaxi,\u00a0<\/em>a name famously associated with the legend of the Bermuda Triangle. There was no one on board and the ship seemed to have been abandoned for decades,\u00a0suggesting that this could actually be the tramp freighter that disappeared in 1925.<\/div>\n
An exhaustive search of the ship led to the discovery of the captain\u2019s logbook. It was, indeed, associated with the Clinchfield Navigation Company, the owners of theSS Cotopaxi<\/em>, but hasn\u2019t brought any clue\u00a0concerning what happened to the ship over the last 90 years.<\/div>\n

On 29 November 1925, the\u00a0SS<\/em>\u00a0Cotopaxi<\/i>\u00a0departed Charleston, South Carolina,\u00a0and headed towards Havana, Cuba. The\u00a0ship had\u00a0a crew of 32 men,\u00a0under the command of Captain W. J. Meyer, and was carrying a cargo of\u00a02340 tons of\u00a0coal.\u00a0It was reported missing two days later, and was unheard of for almost 90 years.<\/div>\n
The Vice President of Council of Ministers, General Abelardo Colom\u00e9, announced that the Cuban authorities were going to conduct a thorough investigation to elucidate the mystery of the ship\u2019s disappearance and reappearance.<\/div>\n

Popular culture has attributed\u00a0many of the\u00a0disappearances to paranormal\u00a0and supernatural phenomena,\u00a0or to the\u00a0activity\u00a0of extraterrestrial beings. \u00a0One explanation, even pins the blame on leftover technology from the mythical lost continent of Atlantis.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Despite the popularity of all these strange theories, most scientists don\u2019t even\u00a0recognize the existence of the Bermuda Triangle, and\u00a0blame human mistakes and natural phenomena for the disappearances.
